Dr. Carol Parker Walsh was looking to celebrate two years of business and update her headshots. We used an outdoor location and a custom session and image package.
We used our natural light headshot technique during the golden hour of light, about 2 hours before sunset, at this time of year at our latitude was 5pm.
We moved through 2 indoor locations and 6-7 different outdoor locations using the natural light as it changed towards twilight to achieve these headshots. We used bounce cards and modifiers to add light and shadows to create our signature natural light headshot look.

Carol was looking for fun, fashionable and professional portraits to celebrate her two years in business. We used our natural light technique indoors of a hotel lobby and coffee shop as well as outdoor locations near a library and park in downtown Vancouver, Washington.

“Erica is very professional and made me feel at ease during the shoot, which resulted in great photos. She had great suggestions along the way and took the time to get things right, encouraged me to change outfits – which made a huge difference – and was proactive with angles / coaching me on which way to move to get the best result. Highly recommend!”

“Erica is an incredible photographer! I recently booked her for headshots needed for my career. I have never been a fan of having my picture taken, it has always felt uncomfortable and awkward. However, Erica was a wonderful coach, her energy made the entire process so easy and actually enjoyable. Not only do I love my final photos, but I have already received many compliments on them. You won’t regret booking with Erica.”

As part of her BFA in photography and design, Erica J Mitchell is working on a photography project focusing on the identity and creative spaces of Poets currently (or recently) creating work in Portland, Oregon. This show features highlights from that ongoing body of work. Featured poets include: Shayla Lawson, Liz Mehl, Coleman Stevenson, Brandi Katherine Herrera, Jeff Alessandrelli, Carl Adamshick, Zachary Schomburg, Dao Strom, Megan Elizabeth Saint-Marie, Veronica Martin, A.M. O’Malley, Stephanie Adams-Santos, Grant Gerald Miller, Drew Swenhaugen, & Hajara Quinn.
Mitchell says of her work:
“Curiosity has always driven me to explore new subjects. For a new portrait project I wanted to focus on a particular subculture, and was drawn to the world of poets living in Portland, Oregon. Using my photographic study I was interested to discover the inner workings of this different creative culture, and see how these poets’ processes compare to my own. Through this project I’ve learned a lot about this different medium, and learned that across genres all artists share many more methodologies and processes than I’d previously assumed.
As an artist, I’ve found that I like to surround myself with objects or create diorama-like spaces for inspiration. I approached this project wanting to learn more about the spaces each writer was drawn to when creating, and capture how these spaces reflect each poet’s interests and motivations, thus informing their work.”

Newberg, Oregon USA – Willamette Valley – Oregon Wine Country – 21 miles SW of Portland
From the website “Growing up the farm, founder Christian and his brothers, cousins, and neighbors loved to play a nighttime tag game they called Wolves & People. Then there’s the fact that ancient Romans called hops humulus lupulus, or the “wolf among weeds,” and that Oregon’s first non-native settlers gathered very nearby in 1843 for a series of “wolf meetings” and soon formed the provisional state of Oregon. Most important, Wolves & People is a brewery celebrating the pursuit of wildness itself, in ingredients, flavors, and creativity.”
