Natural Light Headshots: Outdoor vs. Indoor

Lighting is everything and in photography it’s the source of our (photographer’s) work. So when considering professional photography for your new Headshot, start with the light.

You wouldn’t think that physics plays a role in how a natural light photographer works but it’s essential.

For example when photographing outdoors during high noon the photographer has to consider the following: the yellow colored sunlight and the direction it shines, the sunlight hitting green grass and reflecting up, the cool blue sky color reflecting down and any other surfaces reflecting color.

When indoors photographing can be a lot more simple but so can the background. The warm sunlight hit’s the white transparent curtains and diffuses onto the subject.

Location is the next thing to consider. Where you choose to be photographed plays a part in the outcome of your headshot. Do you want a natural environment or background to enhance your surroundings? Do you want a white background? Do you want to journey a city block or park?

One reason to work with an indoor studio is base sometimes solely on weather. Here in Portland, Oregon we can get a lot of cold and rainy weather which makes outdoor locations harder to achieve. You definitely don’t want to be freezing and smiling at the same time.

Indoor studios provide controlled lit lighting, temperature controlled spaces and the ability to change into other outfits.

So now it’s time to think about your next Headshot. Do you want to play in studio or adventure into the great outdoors, city blocks or your own workspace?

Headshot Session in Fall for Christen

Updated executive headshots for Christen at our studio in northwest of downtown Portland, Oregon.

We used the large south facing windows as our light source. The natural light provides the same effect as a 7ft parabolic umbrella modifier for strobe flash but is more gentle and the client can move around the space more freely allowing for us to use multiple backgrounds quickly.

Christen use our Classic Session, which includes 3 image selections from the proof gallery, and added an additional image selection for a total of four new headshots.

Reviewers and Participants

“EXPLORING CONNECTION THROUGH MUSIC. Western culture has relegated live music to formal concert halls and late-nights in frenetic, crowded venues. In settings like these, it’s easy to disregard the profound impact that can be had when music is used as conduit of connection and presence.

We are changing that paradigm.

Connections Concerts put community and care into the forefront of the live music experience.

Based on values of deep listening, respect, vulnerability, and inspiration, our concerts are designed to welcome audience members to an intentionally-curated space for music and conversation.

Connections Concerts are an answer to a plea for togetherness and unity. An opportunity for presence and pleasure, and an invitation for a societal shift toward love, respect, and inclusivity.” —Website

Fashion Designer Sonia Kasparian

An artist, sculptor and designer Sonia Kaskparian works with form, proportion, and structure to create bespoke fashion.

Sonia Kasparian was a designer during the 2019 season of an American reality television series that premiered on Bravo that focuses on fashion design.

During the release of the season on streaming platforms we photographed at the client’s studio using their large window light as the main source of light to add images to her branding.

Sonia Kasparian has always been an artist, and as a child growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, she used drawing to escape and express herself. In elementary school, she studied at the Chicago Art Institute on weekends in a program for skilled young artists to learn more about various types of art, from drawing to sculpture. Always curious to learn more about different facets of art and design, she tried various programs within the school, and while she was intrigued by architectural design, she ultimately enrolled in a fashion design program.

While her first love was fine art, she graduated from Otis/Parsons in Los Angeles and graduated Designer of the Year with a BFA in fashion design with the plan to work in the corporate world to make money with her designs and eventually move back into fine art.

Thirty three years later, Sonia has had stints working at Nike, designing NBA apparel and Team USA Olympic apparel for the men’s and women’s beach volleyball teams, Quicksilver, Roxy, and O’Neil as their Director of Global Branding. Sonia designed OP’s original monokini and created Roxy’s signature board shorts.

These days, Sonia creates bespoke couture and bridal pieces instead of working for a larger company, to focus on one of a kind pieces. She continues to pursue her passion for fine art and building homes as time allows.” –Bravo Project Runway
