What are Editorial Images?

“Editorial Use” means that an image is used as a descriptive visual reference.

Editorial images illustrate and reflect the issues, themes, and events (both big and small) of our world today.

Editorial images portray specific people, places, things and events that provide context for newspaper and magazine articles, blog posts, websites and other non-commercial presentations.

Every image of stock photography can be used for editorial purposes under the standard content license. The difference with editorial images is that they can only be used in this way.

An Editorial Use Only image can be used:

• in a newspaper or magazine article
• on a blog or website for descriptive purposes
• in a non-commercial presentation

An Editorial Use Only image (including those purchased with an extended license) cannot be used:

• in any kind of advertising or promotional material.
• in the creation of items or products for resale (e.g., prints, posters, mugs, stationery, calendars, electronic templates, etc.).
• for any ‘advertorial’ purposes (ie: in sections or supplements in relation to which you receive or pay a fee)

What is Stock Photography?

Stock photography is the supply of photographs, which are often licensed for specific uses. It is used to fulfill the needs of creative assignments instead of hiring a photographer, often for a lower cost. Today, stock images can be presented in searchable online databases. They can be purchased and delivered online. Often, these photographs involve people, and are produced in studios using a wide variety of models posing as professionals, stereotypes, expressing common emotions and gesticulations, or involving pets. Other common stock photography niches include images related to travel and tourism, as well as conceptual photography.
